Temporary Ethernet Connections (IP addresses) for µSR-Facilities
Users at PSI
The purpose of this page is to inform the µSR-Facilities users about
the new possibility to obtain a temporary Ethernet connection during their
stay at PSI.
Background :
The number of users utilizing their own notebooks computers has dramatically
increased these last years. In order to facilitate the connection of these
computers to the Ethernet, the AIT Information Technology Division of PSI
is now offering the possibility to automatically obtain a temporary IP
address, through a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server.
Network Name :
In order to obtain a IP address a Network Name (or Computer Name) should
be defined for your Laptop. The Network (Computer) Names are defined as
follow:
musr-XXXX-N
where XXXX represents the name of the muSR instrument,
i.e. one of the following:
GPS
LTF
GPD
DOLLY
ALC
LEM
and N represents an incrementation number depending on
the number of Laptops used by a given group/collaboration.
Example: musr-GPS-3 is interpreted as the
third laptop used by a group/collaboration working on the GPS instrument.
General Rule :
-
The user is fully responsible during his stay at PSI for any misuse of
the allocated address.
-
Only the above explained Network (Computer) Names should be utilized for
a laptop used at PSI.
Do not use the default Network (Computer) Name that you use at
your Home Institute
Technical Details :
Each counting room is equipped with some 10BaseT Ethernet connections.
Contact the appropriate Instrument Scientist
to make sure that enough connections are available.
Adaptors to other types of connectors will NOT be provided and will
remain the responsibility of the users.
